What Happens When You Mix Weed and Antidepressants?
Marijuana, or marijuana, is also known as weed. It is a psychoactive drug that is made from Cannabis sativa (or Cannabis indica) plants. Antidepressants can cause side effects that range from confusion and nausea to low blood pressure and memory loss.
A study that looked at antidepressant interactions and marijuana use in children and teens found that anxiety and depression are the most prevalent mental disorders among adolescents and children. Youth with depression are twice as likely to report cannabis use, and data suggests that THC concentrations of CYP219-metabolized SSRIs increase the risk of concentration-related SSRI side effects.1
Weed and SSRI
SSRIs are also known as serotonin reuptake inhibitors and are often prescribed for antidepressants. Prozac (Aropax) and Paroxetine, both SSRIs, are two examples. The potency of antidepressant drugs is increased by cannabis consumption, which decreases their metabolism. There is not much research yet on the interaction between cannabis and antidepressants. There is a low to moderate risk of cannabis interactions with SSRIs. The risk of interaction with SSRIs, NDRIs (norrepinephrine/dopamine reuptake inhibits) is low to moderate compared to tricyclic antidepressants such as doxepin or types of sedatives such as Klonopin.
High doses of cannabis and antidepressants can lead to mental disorders. Notability: CBD counteracts many negative effects of THC, and plays an important role in fighting anxiety and depression. However, marijuana mixed with other forms of cannabis can lead to cognitive decline, addiction, and long-term health problems.
